The SUV market in India is booming and there is a long list of SUVs that will be launched this year. Now that 2018 is done and dusted with, it’s time to take a quick look into the rear view mirror to see how SUVs fared last year. In 2018, the SUV segment was totally dominated by the Maruti Brezza and Hyundai Creta. Together, these SUVs sold a whopping 2.76 lakh units. In third place, but quite a distance behing, was the Tata Nexon.
Maruti Suzuki shipped out 1.55 lakh units of the Vitara Brezza in 2018 while Hyundai managed to push out about 1.21 lakh units of the Creta. Tata Motors sold 52,519 units of the Nexon. The massive gap between the Brezza and the Nexon – two SUVs occupying the same sub-4 meter compact SUV segment – shows the sheer dominance of the Brezza over competition. On a similar note, the Hyundai Creta dominated its segment, with the next best seller – the Maruti S- Cross – managing just 41,528 units.
Why’s the Maruti Brezza so popular?
First and foremost, it’s a Maruti Suzuki, and people in India has immense trust for the brand. Anything with a Maruti Suzuki badge has a good chance of success in India, and if the product is actually good along with decent pricing, it’s a foregone conclusion that it will be a mega hit.
In case of the Maruti Brezza, everything comes together. It’s a very competent SUV despite being available only with a single, turbocharged diesel engine option. And then it’s well priced, and has a slew of variants on offer. Maruti slipped in an AMT version last year, and this has made the Brezza more attractive to buyers.
The lack of a petrol engine may have cost the Brezza some sales because other SUVs in the segment such as the Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport offer this option. Maruti is expected to offer a petrol engine on the Brezza sometime later this year.
And now to the Hyundai Creta.
Like the Brezza, the Creta rides on the brand appeal of Hyundai, but has different reasons for dominance. The Creta has a wide range of variants, and is in fact, the most rounded SUV offered in the Indian market. Of course, it looks like an SUV as well.
The Creta is available with petrol and diesel engines. Both manual and automatic gearbox options are available on the SUV. Typically a Hyundai, it is one of the most feature-rich SUVs in its segment. From a sunroof to a smart band that doubles up as a key for entry, the SUV is quite premium as well. And all these factors are coming together to make it a hot seller.
The Tata Nexon is holding its own!
And it’s because of the sheer value it offers. It’s the least priced sub-4 meter compact SUV, and also the most feature-rich in its segment. The Tata Nexon is sold with turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, which gets manual and AMT options. In fact, it’s the only SUV that gets a diesel automatic option. Funky looks are also helping.
