With the runaway success of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza in the Indian market, the brand is now planning to launch a bigger SUV positioned above the Brezza. It is well-known that the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara did not perform quite well in the Indian market due to its extremely high price tag. The largest India car maker is now planning to launch an all-new SUV, which will be based on the Grand Vitara.
The all-new SUV will be developed specifically for the Indian market. It will be placed in the mid-size segment to take on the Hyundai Creta and the upcoming Tata Harrier in the Indian market. The SUV does not get a name or the codename yet but Maruti Suzuki is expected to launch the all-new car in the market by 2020. The all-new upcoming SUV is expected to get a boxy, straight-lined design. It will get an intimidating look with deep creases on the body to add a muscular look.
Maruti Suzuki has not officially revealed any details about the upcoming SUV but Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO, Maruti Suzuki has confirmed to AutoCar that they are studying the bigger SUV for the time and being and are discussing the vehicle with Suzuki Japan. It will take sometime before the car becomes a reality. Maruti will initially launch the 5-seater version of the car but it remains to be seen if they will develop a 7-seater version of the car in the Indian market. Hyundai will soon launch the seven-seater version of the Creta later this year.
The engine options of the upcoming car are also not known yet. However, it is likely to be powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine and the 1.5-litre diesel engine that the brand is currently developing in-house. As per ACI, Maruti earlier planned to power the upcoming SUV with the newly developed 1.5-litre petrol engine that is also available with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz but then dropped the idea to launch a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine to ensure that the SUV gets a strong mid-range power.
The all-new 1.5-litre diesel engine being developed by the brand is expected to be launched soon in the market. It was earlier expected to be launched with the Ciaz facelift and then the all-new Ertiga. However, as per sources, the all-new engine is ready for launch in the Indian market and the Ciaz would be the first car to offer it in the Indian market.
Since it will be a premium product, Maruti Suzuki is highly likely to sell it through the premium Nexa channel. It will be launched in 2020 and will take on the upcoming launches from Tata, Kia and even MG Motors. The new compact SUV is expected to be priced under Rs. 10 lakhs. This price will allow Maruti to position the SUV as a direct Hyundai Creta rival.
