At the 2018 LA Auto Show, Mercedes-AMG dropped the cover off the updated two-door GT models.
These are led by the new AMG GT R Pro, a track-focused version of the GT R with some racing DNA running through its veins.
With the unveiling of the Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro, one would be justified to believe that there would be no new Black Series. But they would be wrong, because it was confirmed by the Affalterbach-based brand’s head honcho, Tobias Moers, once again.

“It’s not the new Black Series, to be honest”, Moers told RoadAndTrack about the new GT R Pro. “It’s a track-enhanced version of the GT R, which was always part of the program.” However, the big announcement came in the form of three letters: “Yep”, as that’s what the AMG boss said when asked if a new Black Series is coming.
Moers didn’t say much more about the upcoming GT Black Series (or is it GT R Black Series?), but he did add that prototypes are currently being tested on the track. Also, they’re bound to hit the Nurburgring in mid-2019, and “you can easily recognize it”.
In all likelihood, the new Black Series model will be launched in 2020, as that date was hinted by Moers earlier this year.
Power will come from the familiar twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, which will be massaged to deliver more than the GT R’s 577 HP. In the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe S, the unit churns out 640 PS (630 hp / 470 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque, but we’ll just have to wait and see what AMG has in store for the reborn Black Series coupe.
