The all-new Suzuki Jimny has gained immense popularity in the international markets. The fourth generation Jimny has been breaking all the sales record set by the model earlier. But can the humble Suzuki Jimny match the off-roading capabilities of a Toyota Fortuner? This video shows you just that.
Toyota Fortuner Vs Maruti Suzuki Jimny
The Toyota Fortuner used in this video is the previous generation model but most of the off-roading components and feature stay identical to the new Fortuner. Both the cars have been taken on trails in South Africa to reach a top spot on a mountain. To start, the air pressure in both the vehicles have been reduced to about 14-17 PSI. This increases the surface contact area between the tyre and the surface, which increases the traction. The model sold in South Africa is the Jimny Sierra model, which gets a more powerful engine and more rugged body panels.
Both the vehicles can be seen taking the off-road trails quite well. In a challenging obstacle where the car has to go through an axle twister, turn and go through another axle twister, the Toyota Fortuner decided not to cross it. As per the video, the Fortuner got stuck because of lower suspension travel and the only way of doing it with the Fortuner was to come in at a higher speed and take the challenge with a momentum. But that could have damaged the vehicle, which is why the Fortuner skipped it. On the other hand, the Suzuki Jimny, being lightweight and having higher suspension travel went through on the obstacle without much problem.
The Suzuki Jimny gets the Brake Limited Slip Differential System. It operates individual brakes to ensure that the wheel without any traction does not spin freely. The system came into use quite a few times during the obstacles and when one of the tyres went up in the air.
The Suzuki Jimny is priced much lower than the Toyota Fortuner. While both of them may be compared when it comes to off-roading, the Toyota Fortuner offers a much more comfortable and larger cabin space. The Suzuki Jimny is powered only by a petrol engine. It gets a 1.5-litre petrol engine that generates a maximum power of 100 Bhp and 130 Nm. The Toyota Fortuner gets both petrol and diesel engine options.
One of the main reasons why the Fortuner struggled more compared to the Jimny is the weight of the vehicle. The Suzuki Jimny is extremely lightweight, which helps it to come out of challenging situations off-the-road. The Toyota Fortuner’s engine needs to work more to ensure that the stuck vehicle comes out of an obstacle. Lighter vehicles always have an advantage when doing off-road and it is rightly showed by the Suzuki Jimny in the video.
